RPC and Total Launch Multilayer Jar for Food Storage Applications

RPC Promens Consumer Corby, a producer of extrusion blow moulded barrier bottles and wide-necked jars, along with oil and gas company Total has launched a new multilayer jar for long-term and high barrier food storage applications.

The lighter weight plastic jars employ injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) technology, thereby offering greater clarity and gloss.

RPC Promens Corby has used a metallocene-based polypropylene (PP) from Total which is specially developed for ISBM technology. The PP used is said to reduce the migration of chemical contaminants from food contact materials into food.

The PP/EVOH/PP jars can withstand temperatures of more than 100°C for pasteurization and sterilization. These multilayer containers act as a efficient barrier against oxygen for long ambient shelf life.

RPC manufactured the container caps using PP. This makes the containers a mono material pack, which facilitates recycling.

The jars, suitable for cook-in sauces, instant coffee, ready meals, fruits and baby foods, offer exceptional on-shelf image along with the convenience and safety benefits of plastic, the companies said.

The companies are developing the jars in several popular retail jar sizes, with additional sizes planned for the future.

By using the new jars, retailers and brand owners can achieve their sustainability targets in terms of packaging and carbon emission reductions.

RPC Promens Consumer Corby is a unit of RPC Group, which operates through injection moulding, thermoforming, and blow moulding segments to manufacture plastic products for packaging and non-packaging markets.

In August this year, RPC Promens Consumer Kutenholz made 1000ml round bottles for salad dressing firm Sylter Salatfrische.
