The Taiwan government will announce a plan for the purchase of up to 250,000 street lamps through an open bid, with the tendering to be held in November and the results to be announced in December, according to industry sources.

Taiwan-based LED firms including Everlight, Delta Electronics, Leadray Energy, Leotek (subsidiary of Lite-On Technology), and Bright LED are the potential winners of the bidding, the sources noted.

By the second quarter of 2013 when the 250,000 LED lamps are installed, the penetration rate of LED street lamps in Taiwan will be the highest in the world – an achievement that will help Taiwan LED lamp makers to tap the international market, said the sources.

A number of international buyers switched their orders for street lamp orders back to Taiwan makers in the past few months after they had bought the lamps from suppliers in China and found the quality of China-made LED lamps unsteady, revealed Lin Cheng-feng, president of Leadray Energy.

Taiwan makers have been in talks with potential buyers for the supply of up to 600,000 LED street lamps recently, Lin indicated, adding that he believes demand for LED street lamps in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Germany, Mexico and Poland all will exceed one million units in the future.

Roland Chiang, general manager of the Solid-state Lighting Business Unit at Delta, also confirmed that the company has received more inquiries from buyers in North America, Europe and even China recently, and expects the lighting business will contribute significantly to revenue growth in the next six months.
