US Support Bangladesh Apparel Export Sector to Reach $ 50 Billion in Export by 2021

US envoy to Bangladesh, Marcia Bernicat said her country would support the vision of the Bangladesh apparel export sector to reach US$ 50 billion in exports by 2021.

"We will continue to work with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) to help it to touch $50 billion in exports by the country’s 50th anniversary," she said after a meeting with BGMEA officials.

She called the Bangladesh RMG industry as a jobs growth sector and added that it clearly drives good environmental practices as well as social change in the country.

She pledged her government’s support to do all it can to help ensure that the garment sector achieved all the goals.

She shared that changes were being seen in the RMG sector as dangerous factories have been closed, new labour inspectors hired and over 200 hundred trade unions recognised.

She lauded the level of transparency involved especially in the inspection process and also the remediation efforts that are underway.

She called these initiatives happening in Bangladesh as unparalleled anywhere in the world.

She laid particular emphasises on implementation of law and informed that Bangladesh's labour act must be implemented and assured so that factories can effectively comply with the laws.

Earlier, BGMEA president, Atiqul Islam made a presentation on garment factories, the present situation and exports from the sector to the US and other countries.

The BGMEA president sought more cooperation from the US to export apparel products to its shores.
