The Future of Outdoor Lighting Is LEDs

The future of outdoor lighting is constantly changing, LEDs, the reduction of electricity consumption, and even major feats like to removing oneself from the grid all together? The US Energy Information Association monitors energy usage in the US, they seem to have dibble dabbled into every aspect of energy consumption. After crunching a few numbers in 2010, they came up with the average yearly usage for the US (both residential and commercial sectors) to be about 499 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh).

About 297 billion kWh of the 499 billion were consumed for lighting by the commercial sector, this includes commercial facilities, institutional buildings, public street lights and highway lighting.  Keep in mind that most electricty comes from nuclear, gas or coal, all of which over time add on to the worldwide carbon footprint.

In search of alternatives to using up our planetary resources, many companies are working hard to improve electricity consumption to help decrease the world’s overall carbon footprint. Including Urban Green Energy (UGE), a New York based company that has placed some their energy into improving street lighting.
