Samsung Focused on Cheaper Smartphones to Announce Moto G Rival

Samsung Galaxy J1 is a Moto G rival

Samsung wasn't kidding when it said it would focus on cheaper smartphones. Pictures of its Moto G rival have just leaked, and we could see it announced as soon as tomorrow.

The Galaxy J1 has a familiar design, with rounded corners and a capsule-shaped home button. Because it's a budget device, the specs aren't anything to write home about. It comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front facer. At 4.3 inches, the screen is tiny by today's standards, and packs a WVGA resolution (in other words, 800x480 pixels). Android KitKat comes as standard instead of Lollipop.

Inside is a 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core Marvell PXA1908 processor, 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage which is bolstered by a microSD card slot. It also packs a 1,850mAh battery.

No fewer than four versions will be available, most probably depending on where you are in the world. These are: single-SIM LTE, dual-SIM LTE, single-SIM 3G and dual-SIM 3G. The front-facing snapper on the 3G models will be VGA instead of 2 megapixels.

According to SamMobile, who reported the leaked pics, the date of January 14 is mentioned in the promotional materials, so we could see the handset announced as soon as tomorrow. Its wallpapers and firmware have also been uploaded to the web, so we're expecting this budget blower to land sooner rather than later.

Samsung announced the A7 yesterday. It's an all-metal handset that could well pave the way for the Galaxy S6.
