Social Network Giant Twitter Wins an Emmy Award

Social network giant Twitter has won an Emmy award, it's been revealed.

At the 66th annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards (yes, it's a thing), Twitter picked up a shiny golden trinket for "Innovation in Improving Engagement Around Television in Social media."

According to committee chairman Robert P. Seidel, these awards are intended "to honor these technology companies and individuals whose innovation and vision have materially affected the way the audience views television."

With Twitter becoming the go to place for PR firms and tech-savvy stars to flog their latest films and TV programs, it's not too difficult to see the contribution the social network has made in the field.

As Engadget points out, many TV live programs now have Twitter feeds scrolling along the bottom of the screen, lending an air of viewer interactivity without the need for flaky phone-ins.

Elsewhere, several more familiar tech companies have won tech Emmy awards.

Netflix has one for "Pioneering Development of 2nd Screen Navigable Mosaic for Direct Programmer Offerings to Consumers via the Internet" (phew), and one for "Non-Live Large Scale Online Video Systems."

Meanwhile Apple, Roku, Microsoft, Sony, and Tivo have won awards in the "Television Enhancement Devices" category.

Back in 2013 Netflix became the first streaming service to be nominated for and indeed win a mainstream Emmy award (three, actually), but of course that was for the original content it was producing.
