Diageo Is Set to Provide Nutritional Information

Diageo is set to be the first alcohol company to voluntarily provide nutritional information including calories per typical serve and alcohol content on all of its products.

The information will be displayed on packaging as well as on its website Drinkiq.com.

The firm has already secured regulatory approval in US, and will work with regulators around the world to agree to the format of the labels.

This decision will help consumers make informed choices and reduce the misuse of alcohol, claimed the company.

Diageo chief executive Ivan Menezes was quoted by Thedrinkbusiness.com as saying: "Currently, there is no obligation to provide such information in markets worldwide, but we know that consumers are increasingly discerning about what's in their glass.

"We want to provide alcohol and nutrition information that consumers can quickly understand, instead of expecting them to do the maths."

Displaying nutritional information on labels is not mandatory in EU, although other foodstuffs are required to do so per 100ml.

Diageo said it will work with the EU to set up a standard alcohol unit.
