Great Lakes Cheese to Construct Packaging Facility in Wausau, US

Great Lakes Cheese (GLC) is building a new $55m cheese packaging facility in Wausau, Wisconsin, US.

The company has entered into an agreement with the City of Wausau to build the plant, which will help to enhance its production operations in the region.

Under the deal, the City of Wausau will provide $5.9m in tax incentives in the form of a 10 year reverse TIF, helping to reduce the cost of building the new facility.

The company is planning to conduct groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility by the end of this month.

GLC will donate the current plant located on DeVoe Street to the City of Wausau.

In 2003, GLC acquired Lemke Cheese & Packaging and has since made significant investments in the DeVoe Street plant, which has around 200 employees.

GLC said the new facility will generate around 125 new jobs within three years of completion, in addition to the construction jobs.

GLC project manager Matt Wilkinson said: "We are grateful to the City of Wausau for its significant contribution to our project.

"This assistance makes it possible for GLC to remain in Wausau, where our cheese business has a 90-year history."

GLC CEO Dan Zagzebski said: “We think in terms of generations, not quarters. Looking through a long-term lens allows us to focus not only on what will make us more competitive, but also on what's right for our employees and our communities."

With around 2,600 employees, GLC operates nine plants in five US states and remains privately owned by the Epprecht Family.
