The UK’s Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) has collaborated with British Glass and the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) to launch a new recycling communications initiative for local authorities.
Aimed at increasing the recovery of aluminum caps and closures for recycling, the new 'You Can Leave Your Cap On' campaign encourages recyclers to screw the caps back on their empty bottles prior to recycling.
Alupro executive director Rick Hindley said it is important that the consumer gets in the habit of recycling aluminum bottle closures so that the can be captured for reprocessing, as the market for them is growing rapidly, particularly for wine bottles.
"The message to the public is simple; screwing the top back on the empty bottle before recycling is the easiest way for people to do their bit to recycle this valuable material," Hindley added.
Said to be the part of a trial campaign with four local authorities, the 'You Can Leave Your Cap On' communications program has been designed to encourage households.
The households can screw the tops back on empty glass bottles, such as wine, spirits and olive oil before placing them out to recycle with the help of local bring banks or kerbside recycling containers.
Alupro's latest partnership complements the work done by the company to promote wider metal packaging recycling through the industry partnerships it manages, especially the 'MetalMatters' program.
The new caps and closures recycling campaign ensures that the collected material is officially reported through the Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) system.
