KFC Promised to Modify Its Packaging to Make It More Hedgehog-Friendly

Fast food giant KFC has promised to modify its packaging to make it more hedgehog-friendly.

KFC Promises to Introduce Hedgehog-Friendly Packaging in UK and Ireland

The company took the decision following mounting pressure from the Shropshire-based charity, the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS).

The charity had pointed out that hedgehogs were getting trapped due to the large holes in the lids of dumped Krushems milkshake cups.

BHPS had won a similar battle in 2006 against fast food giants McDonalds whose McFlurry cup lids posed a similar danger to hedgehogs which were getting stuck in the cup while attempting to scoop the remaining ice cream.

Following the pressure from the group, McDonalds had redesigned the packaging of its product and also stamped 'litter harms wildlife' warnings on every new lid.

BHPS CEO Fay Vass said: "We are delighted that KFC are changing their packaging to prevent littered cups from harming hedgehogs. We would ask that people dispose of litter responsibly as it can have a devastating impact on wildlife."

A spokesperson from KFC said: "From today, KFC in the UK and Ireland will cease production of the current lid for the Krushems cup.

"After consultation with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, KFC UK/I has developed a new lid with a smaller aperture to prevent potential harm to wildlife and will introduce this into all restaurants over the coming months."

KFC had been in talks with the charity for the past eight to nine months after a video showed a hedgehog stuck in the Krushems milkshake cups trying to escape.
