Metsa Board Introduced a New Lightweight and Sustainable Board for Food Service Industry

Finland-based paper and pulp company Metsa Board has introduced a new lightweight and sustainable board, Carta Dedica, for food service industry.

Said to be safe for food contact, the board is available in a clay coating version for premium print results and an uncoated version providing a natural appearance.

In addition, the hard-sized Carta Dedica board is ideal for extrusion- or dispersion-coating during the need for an additional barrier, according to the company.

Carta Dedica, which is manufactured at the company's Tako mill in Finland, is suitable for cups, plates, trays, clamshells, collars and lids, as well as general food packaging applications.

The new light weight board can be used for different types of food, including ice cream, bakery, confectionery, sandwiches and wraps, as well as hot, cold and chilled drinks.

When in contact with liquids, moist foods or condensation, the board can retain strength and has runnability in converting and printing due to its consistent quality.

Manufactured without optical brighteners, Carta Dedica is recyclable, biodegradable and is odour and taint neutral. It uses less raw material and energy in manufacturing and transport.

Metsa Board food and beverage commercial director Nina Happonen said the new sustainable board offers a solution, which will be appreciated by consumers, retailers, converters and brand owners.

"It is made from renewable fresh fibres, and can be easily recycled - reducing the impact of litter. And it is both lightweight and strong, yielding more items per tonne and allowing for cost reductions," Happonen added.

All the raw materials used in manufacturing of the board can be traced to source and are free from genetically modified organisms.
