Post processing camera Lytro has gone wireless and has launched an app that lets camera users manipulate photos from their iPhone and iPad.

In an announcement overnight, Lytro said it was now activating the camera’s wireless capability which had been present on existing Lytro cameras, but until now, dormant. The WiFi capability will be activated by a software/firmware upgrade, Lytro told The Australian.

The Lytro is a unique long-barrelled camera that lets users shoot photos and then later focus them using post-processing software. The camera shoots a 3D image which also lets users slightly alter the perspective of an image, after it was taken.

The new app lets camera owners preview and upload pictures to Lytro.com directly from their iOS device while on the go, using either a cellular or Wi-Fi network.

The Lytro Mobile App will be available internationally as a free download, starting today.

"As the first to bring light field photography to consumers, we believe there is vast potential to this technology, and Lytro Mobile is the next step in building this category," Lytro chief executive Jason Rosenthal said.

Camera owners and non-camera owners can experience Lytro post-processing effects on their iOS devices, including refocusing pictures and experiencing perspective shift.

App users also can share Lytro photos with Facebook, Twitter, via email or SMS, view Lytro photos shared with Lytro.com, save a Lytro picture as an animated GIF to their iOS camera roll, and access a series of t“Learn” tip - educational content that Lytro says will expand over time.

An Android version of the app will be available later, Lytro says.
