Volvo Car Group Has Confirmed Its Plans to Cut Production at Torslanda Facility

Swedish automobile manufacturer Volvo Car Group has confirmed its plans to cut production at Torslanda facility in Hisingen and Ghent facility in Belgium.

The Torslanda plant will have three production-free days in week 51, before the Christmas holidays, while the Ghent facility will have two production-free days.

In addition, three individual work shifts will also be eliminated, including one in Ghent, two in Torslanda from production schedule for December.

Volvo Cars Manufacturing senior vice president Lars Wrebo said that the firm has indicated before that it needs to be flexible in light of the current market situation, and that it will use the existing flexibility in its system when needed.

"While sales volumes have shown a very positive trend in recent years, we have seen a continuous decline in customer demand in 2012 which so far has not picked up," Wrebo said.

"Therefore a further adjustment to our production output is required."

The automaker has confirmed its plans to reduce the line speed of the Torslanda plant to 45 cars per hour during the initial months of 2013.

The Torslanda facility manufactures the XC90s along with the S80, V70 and XC70, and V60 models, while Ghent facility produces the S60, XC60, C30 and V40 models in addition to the new V40 Cross Country.
