Bradford City Park Has Been Crowned 'urban Lighting Project of The Year'

Bradford City Park has been crowned 'Urban Lighting Project of the Year' at the prestigious Lux Awards ceremony in London, on the 6 November.

Citied by judges as 'transformative' and 'socially inclusive', the park, which was created for Bradford Council, was completed in March 2012 and is now a high-quality public realm space that is engaging for residents and visitors alike.

Arup provided a range of engineering services for the project, for which lighting was a key aspect of the design.

"Designing for an urban environment is one of the greatest challenges in the 21st century. The fact that a modern city now operates around the clock, on a 24 hour basis, means that lighting has a major part to play in our lives at night. Our design for City Park does not only extend the use of the space after dark but it creates a distinctive pedestrian experience which can be enjoyed at all times of the day or night."

— Florence Lam, Director at Arup and Global Leader of the Lighting Design Practice.

"This is the latest in a number of awards for City Park and we are delighted that its spectacular lighting has received national recognition. Since its opening last March the park has attracted thousands of visitors and made a positive impact on the city centre."

— Barra Mac Ruairi, Bradford Council’s Strategic Director for Regeneration and Culture.

Arup was also highly commended for ‘Lighting Design Practice of the Year’ and for its joint entry with Burns & Nice in the Urban Lighting Project of the Year category for Leicester Square. Organised by Lux magazine and the Lighting Industry Association, the awards are designed to celebrate and reward creativity and sustainability in lighting. Recognising not just manufacturers and designers, but also clients and end users, for using lighting in exceptional ways to improve their lit environment and reduce energy consumption.
