BorgWarner Is Providing Its New Three-Stage Turbocharging Technology for BMW's M Performan

US-based automotive components and parts supplier BorgWarner is providing its new three-stage turbocharging technology for BMW's M Performance diesel engine.

With the new three-stage turbocharging system, the 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line diesel engine developed for BMW M Performance automobiles is claimed to deliver an enhanced performance and improved fuel economy.

BMW's M Performance diesel engine, which powers M550d xDrive Sedan and Touring, X5 M50d Touring, and X6 M50d models, will deliver a maximum output of 280kW and a maximum torque of 740Nm.

The three-stage turbocharging system includes two small BV45 high-pressure variable turbine geometry turbochargers integrated with one large B2 low-pressure water-cooled turbocharger.

BorgWarner's new three-stage turbocharging technology that meets the Euro 6 emissions standards will enable BMW M550d xDrive Sedan to improve about 25% power output and 8% fuel economy, compared with the 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW 740d that is powered by a BorgWarner regulated two-stage (R2S ) turbocharging system.

The three-stage turbocharged diesel engine is claimed to deliver an output of 93.6 kW per litre, while the two-stage version displays an output of 75.2 kW per litre.
