PTT Global Chemical, Thai Union Partner on Sustainable Packaging

PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) has partnered with seafood producer Thai Union Group to jointly research and develop packaging and packaging materials for sustainable business practices.

The partnership will cater to the food industry by developing innovative and environmentally friendly bio-based and petroleum-based materials and packaging.

The new packaging materials to be developed are expected to boost food safety and packaging durability. They are also likely to reduce the waste and costs associated with production and raw material costs.

The research and development units of the companies will offer innovations in new materials and packaging like bioplastics and biodegradable plastics. These materials lessen impact on the environment with the reduction of raw materials and waste.

According to PTTGC president & CEO Supattanapong Punmeechaow, the company aims to boost the efficiency of polymers. This, Punmeechaow says, is to cater to customer requirements, more effectively in line with the new R&D partnership on packaging and packaging materials with Thai Union.

The two partners had previously collaborated on developing an anti-bacterial plastic film which is used in aqua-cultural to keep a check on the growth of unwanted bacteria and thereby, ensuring that the shrimp farms are healthy and free from diseases.

Apart from that, PTTGC and Thai Union had jointly developed a new packaging material that boasts higher durability levels and product safety while cutting down on raw materials by 30%.

Thai Union CEO Thiraphong Chansiri said: “Our partnership is aimed at developing safe and sustainable packaging for Thai Union’s food products and processes.

“Through our SeaChange sustainability strategy, we are demonstrating our leadership and our company’s commitment to sustainable development. Innovation in processes, packaging and product development is an important part of delivering sustainable growth for all.”
