BMW 2 Series Specifications Leaked: M235I to Get 240kw

The specifications for three upcoming BMW 2 Series models have been leaked online by one of the car maker’s international websites.

Pricing and specification information for the new 220d, 220i and M235i coupes was accidentally posted on BMW South Africa’s official website and quickly removed, but not before enthusiast forum Bimmerpost could access it and share it with the world.

Based on the 1 Series hatchback and replacing the outgoing 1 Series coupe, the new 2 Series is due to start production in November ahead of its Australian launch in early 2014.

According to the leaked spec sheets, the M235i coupe gains an additional 5kW over its M135i sibling.

Sharing the same turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, the M235i produces 240kW at 5800rpm and 450Nm at 1300-4500rpm – an identical torque figure to the hatch, though, reached 50rpm later and sustained for 500rpm less.

Sitting on the same 2690mm wheelbase, the M235i is 114mm longer, 9mm wider and 3mm lower than the current 1 Series hatch equivalent. It also has a 4mm-wider front track and weighs 25kg more at 1455kg (1470kg auto).

Despite the weight penalty, the flagship 2 Series is faster than its hatch sibling, claiming 0-100km/h in 5.0 seconds (4.8sec auto) compared with the M135i’s 5.1sec (4.9sec auto).

Fuel consumption is up marginally from figures of 8.0L/100km (manual) and 7.5L/100km (auto) to 8.1L/100km and 7.6L/100km respectively. Top speed remains electronically limited to 250km/h.

Still using a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine – as does the current 120i coupe – the 220i coupe sees power climb from 115kW at 6400rpm to 135kW at 5000rpm. Torque too is increased from 200Nm at 3600rpm to 270Nm at 1250-4500rpm. Acceleration improves accordingly by 1.6 seconds.

The 220i’s combined fuel consumption figure is just as impressive with reductions as great as 25 per cent seen across both manual and automatic transmissions.

The most frugal model remains the diesel, with the new 220d claiming 4.5L/100km in manual guise and 4.2L/100km when its 135kW/380Nm 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit is tied to the automatic.

Down on power and torque compared with the currently available 150kW/400Nm 123d coupe, the 220d gains efficiency at the cost of performance with 0-100km/h acceleration times rising 0.2sec (0.1 auto).
