HWRCs Could Make to Diverting Waste From Landfill

Recent research by Carpet Recycling UK (CRUK) has shown the significant contribution that the separation of carpet waste at Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) could make to diverting waste from landfill.
 
A study of HWRCs nationally found that ten local authorities operating across 61 sites are currently using dedicated bins to send carpet waste on for recycling or energy from waste (EfW).
 
These sites are collecting a total of 14,620 tonnes of domestic carpets per year from 2.3 million households; equivalent to an average of 6.4 kgs of carpet waste per household per year.
 
Laurance Bird, CRUK director, who gathered the data, would like to see Local Authorities made aware of these figures: "Currently an estimated 84% of end-of-life carpet still ends up in landfill and a significant proportion of this passes through HWRC's."
 
"This figure of carpet waste per household provides an excellent benchmark to demonstrate to Local Authorities what can be achieved by using dedicated carpet bins at HWRCs, especially with new outlets for waste carpet offering alternatives to landfill developing all the time."
