Renault,South Korean electronics group LG CHEM and French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission(CEA)are preparing to sign a three-way agreement in September 2012 to produce electric vehicle(EV)batteries.

Renault currently uses LG power packs for powering its Twizy two-seat EV and it is planning to use the batteries in upcoming Zoe EV and has a battery research joint venture with the CEA.

The agreement also includes construction of LG Chem-led European battery facility in France, which will produce new batteries from the end of 2015 and new batteries would begin powering the vehicles from 2017.

In 2010,Renault and the CEA have collaborated in the areas of clean vehicles and mobility for all and they have signed research agreements which also include a strategic cooperation contract for new battery technologies.

Built as part of this agreement, the combined Renault/CEA laboratory'advanced batteries',has been aimed at developing new technology for lithium-ion batteries in the medium term.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance is planning an EUR4bn investment in EVs before 2015 and to sell 1,500,000 EVs before 2016.

According to Renault third-generation electric motor is planned to be built at Cléon from 2013.

This agreement complements the studies currently under way between Renault and the CEA concerning the development of next-generation batteries.

These batteries will be more durable and fast-charging capacity and LG Chem will provide technological expertise in this field.
