Average Retail Pricing of LED Light Bulb Increased in Japan While Other Markets Saw Fall

The March average retail pricing of retrofit 40W and 60W LED light bulbs increased in Japan while other markets saw prices fall compared to February.

According to Digitimes Research, the March average retail prices of retrofit 40W and 60W LED light bulbs in Japan were JPY1,815/unit (US$18.47/unit) and JPY2,694/unit, respectively. Compared to February, the March average prices of the two products showed on-month increases of 2.3% and 0.3%, respectively.

In South Korea, the March average retail prices of retrofit 40W and 60W LED light bulbs were KRW15,331/unit (US$13.60/unit) and KRW22,275/unit, respectively, representing on-month decreases of 2.9% and 2.3%, respectively.

The March average price of 7W LED light bulbs from local brands in China was CNY41.3/unit (US$6.67/unit), showing an on-month decrease of 2.4%; the average price of 9W LED light bulbs was CNY55.1/unit, showing an on-month decrease of 2.3%. The highest prices of the 7W and 9W LED light bulbs came from China-based tier-one firm Tsinghua Tongfang at CNY99.5/unit and CNY110/unit, respectively. The March prices of 7W LED light bulbs from Philips and Osram showed on-month decreases of 32.3% and 6.4%, respectively.

In the US market, March average retail prices of retrofit 40W and 60W LED light bulbs were US$21.6/unit and US$24.5/unit, showing sequential decreases of 11.8% and 8.2%, respectively. In Europe, the March average retail price of retrofit 40W LED light bulbs was EUR16.1/unit (US$21.08/unit), up by 1.3% compared to February. The March average price for retrofit 60W LED light bulbs in Europe was EUR25.7/unit, down by 0.8% compared to February.

Digitimes Research has found that in March, South Korea-based LG Electronics had the highest price-performance ratio for its retrofit 40W and 60W LED light bulbs at 66lm/US$1 and 98.7lm/US$1. As for brightness efficiency, Sharp's retrofit 40W LED light bulbs had the highest average brightness efficiency at 75.6lm/W compared to products of the same level by other brands while Toshiba was number one in the brightness efficiency of retrofit 60W LED light bulbs with 92.1lm/W.
