DuPont Teijin Films has introduced a new class of flame retardant PET polyester films to promises to help designers in the industrial, transportation, construction, electronics and label industries provide improved safety.
The new halogen-free, clear Melinex FR2XX series of PET films are VTM-0 flame rating certified by UL’s UL 94 flame classification testing. They combine the inherent polyester film properties.
DuPont Teijin Films business development manager Scott Gordon said: “Traditional PET polyester films are well-known for their performance and reliability characteristics, and this new film type has combined those properties with the highly desired VTM-0 certification.
“We have worked closely with key customers to develop a clear flame retardant film that meets the needs of several industry segments.”
Applications of the low-cost Melinex FR220 film include laminate structures for construction and transportation, battery labels, insulating materials for wire and cable, electronic office products, lighting and flexible printed circuitry.
According to recent reports, the usage of flame retardant polymer growth rate have been predicted to over 7% annually, driven by stringent fire safety requirements in the construction, automotive and other industries.
Although most PET polyester films offer physical durability, chemical resistance and low water absorption, their typical flame classification ratings stand at VTM-2 level, DuPont said.
DuPont Teijin Films is a joint venture between DuPont and Teijin. It offers polyester films and related services for the specialty, industrial, packaging and advanced magnetic media, photo systems, electrical and electronics markets.
