The Global Power Management Semiconductor Market Is Expected to Report 9.7% Rise

Power management semiconductor market to rise 9.7% during Q2

The global power management semiconductor market is expected to report 9.7% rise during the second quarter of 2012 (2Q12) to $7.9bn when compared to $7.2bn during the first quarter 1Q12, according to a new report.

IHS's iSuppli Power Management Market Tracker revealed that the rise was contributed by strong demand from electronic products which include smartphones and media tablets.

IHS power management senior principal analyst Marijana Vukicevic said while lack of demand was to blame for the dismal performance during the fourth and first quarters, a pick up in the market for power management chips in consumer-type products is believed to have returned the market to growth in the second quarter.

"The products responsible for fueling growth include mobile handsets, media tablets, personal computers and other consumer electronics items, such as digital still cameras," Vukicevic said.

"In these devices, efficient power management is becoming more important to consumers - a significant feature given that electronic devices are almost never shut off or powered down anymore."

The positive performance for the period stands in marked contrast to the 10.7% decrease seen in the fourth quarter of 2011 and the 4% contraction in revenues that followed in the first quarter of 2012.

IHS also revealed that the global revenues for power management semiconductors are projected to reach $32.4bn in 2012, reporting a modest projected rise of about 1.7%.

Consumer markets are anticipated to resume heavy starting in 2013, but the industrial and alternative energy sectors are expected to witness rise continued rise.

During the next five years until 2016, the use of power management semiconductors in media tablets is expected to rise 30%, while important market-boosting products including mobile handsets, mobile infrastructure and digital set-top boxes are expected to report 11.7%, 13.1% and 12.3% rises respectively during the period.

During the period, insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) modules, low-voltage MOSFET are expected to witness strong rises, while the application markets for power management components will be headed by DC-DC non-isolated usage.
