Mondelez International Uses Cage-Free Eggs to Produce Toblerone

International animal welfare organization Four Paws has announced that the chocolate bar Toblerone, which is owned by Mondelēz International, will now be produced only with eggs laid by cage free hens.

This move comes after Mondelez International(formerly known as Kraft Foods)made a decision to improve the lives of the animals that contribute to the ingredients in its products.

Four Paws noted that according to a survey conducted in 2011,most Europeans would like eggs used in processed foods to be labelled so that they can choose products containing cage free eggs. However, such labelling system is currently only in place for whole eggs.

In 2012,the European Union banned conventional cages for hens. However, the hens are still being kept in illegal conditions, according to Four Paws. These eggs are being primarily used in processed foods and are not being described on labels.

Four Paws International campaign director Gabriel Paun said that the lack of hidden egg labelling leads to confusion among consumers and keeps a large number of animals suffering in tiny cages.

"Food companies around the world need to listen to the wishes of millions of their customers and start labelling the hidden eggs in their foods,"Paun added.
