Total 2Q12 Revenues of Taiwan LED Firms Has a Increase of 22.7%

Market research shows that total second-quarter 2012 revenues of publicly traded Taiwan-based LED firms reached NT$25.82 billion (US$861 million), an on-quarter increase of 22.7%. LED firms have been expressing concerns about market conditions for the second half of the year.

Studies showed that total revenues of LED chipmakers in the second quarter were NT$11.357 billion, up 26.9% on quarter but down 14.8% on year.

Total June revenues of LED chipmakers were flat compared to May, reaching NT$3.83 billion. However, this figure represented an on-year decrease of 11.5%. China-based LED chipmakers began to invade Taiwan's market in May using low prices to gain market share. This will be a challenge for Taiwan-based LED chipmakers to differentiate products using stability and quality.

For LED packaging houses, total second-quarter 2012 revenues were NT$14.465 billion, up 19.5% on quarter but down 7.9% on year. June revenues were quite stable with a total of NT$4.965 billion, an on-month increase of 2.3% and flat compared to the same period in 2011.

Shipments of LED backlight units (BLUs) for TVs, notebooks and mobile phones are expected to fall in second-half 2012 due to shrinking demand. With the debt crisis in Europe, LED lighting firms are also concerned about falling shipments.
