The LED ceiling and tube light market showed significant growth in Japan in November 2012. Due to limited electricity, Japan has been raising awareness on saving energy. In 2012, the LED lighting penetration rate is likely to reach 45.3%. The Japan market is expected to grow continuously as more stores, offices, factories and street lamps are expected to be switched to LED lighting. The 2013 LED lighting penetration rate is estimated to be 54.6% in Japan.

Japan's LED lighting market output value is expected to reach JPY384.1 billion (US$4.66 billion) in 2013, according to Digitimes Research.

Panasonic is Japan's biggest LED lighting maker with a market share of 42% in 2012. However, other Japan-based LED lighting makers such as Toshiba and Hitachi have been seeing rising revenues from the market. In addition, Panasonic plans to strengthen its international market share, hence Panasonic's Japan market share in 2013 and 2015 is likely to fall to 37.5% and 30.3%.

Market growth for LED ceiling lights in 2012 has been significant, reaching 3.2 million units, close to on-year growth of 100%. In 2013, Japan-based LED lighting makers plan to focus on this product by expanding production lines, hence the market is likely to reach 4.3 million units.

LED tube lighting also showed significant growth, especially for public indoor spaces. As the quality and efficiency of the product has increased, the market has reached 12 million units in 2012. Due to increasing demand, the growth rate of the market is expected to be 81% in 2013.
