NPL Has Ruggedised Power Metrology So That It Can Be Used in The Field

The UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) has ruggedised power metrology so that it can be used in the field.

Its briefcase-sized instrument, which it calls a 'digitiser', addresses a need from researchers preparing to convert national power grids into smart grids, where subtle low-order effects have to be measured in the presence of large gross power flows.

"We have a lot of experience with measurements in the lab and wanted to apply our technology to the field," NPL research scientist Paul Clarkson told Electronics Weekly. "The hardware is accurate to around 10ppm and final accuracy is dependent on transducers. We can use Rogowski coils and current shunts up to about 1,000A. It's about 100ppm for measurements on 415V."
