The US Government Would Ease Imports Ban on Myanmar

United States of America: US Eases Ban on From Myanmar

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has announced that the US Government would ease its imports ban on Myanmar(also called Burma),during her meeting with Myanmarese President Thein Sein,on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.

The Secretary said the US Government is normalizing its trade relations with Myanmar,as the country has shown progress towards reform, and also in view of the requests from both government and opposition quarters.

Ms.Clinton said the step would result in providing more opportunities for Myanmarese entrepreneurs to export their goods to the US.

The lifting of import ban follows the Obama administration's revival of diplomatic relations with the Southeast Asian country as well as lifting of the ban on US investment in Myanmar, earlier this year.

Last week,Nobel Laureate and veteran Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi had also urged the US to lift its import sanctions to support the ongoing economic reform process in the country.

Thein Sein's Government has gradually begun reforming Myanmar's economy and easing media censorship since it took office in March 2011,after nearly five-decades of military rule.

The Myanmar Garment Association has welcomed the US decision to lift its import sanctions and it hoped that the country's garment sector would benefit from the decision.
