Powerloom Is Seeking Re-Introduction of Duty Drawback Scheme

The powerloom industry is seeking re-introduction of duty drawback scheme so as to involve more units in export of textiles.

“Powerloom sector is facing lot of problems and so we need some relief,” M Duraisamy, who took over as chairman of Powerloom Development and Export Promotion Council (PDEXCIL) on November 22, told reporters in Erode.

He said that they are not against the handloom sector, but the Central Government’s support is needed if the powerloom sector’s share in India’s textile exports is to be increased beyond the present two per cent.

Already, the Union Government had decreased the number of cloth items reserved only for handlooms from 22 to 11, on the representation of the powerloom industry, he informed.

Duraisamy said a team of PDEXCIL office bearers will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi soon to seek more concessions for the sector, including re-introduction of duty drawback.

Although, the powerloom industry lags behind in exports, it supplies nearly 60 percent of India’s domestic textile needs. (RKS)
