Global Crude Steel Output Rises by 2.3% in The First Quarter

According to the World Steel Association (Worldsteel), in March this year the crude steel output of 63 countries surveyed across the globe reached 134.9 million mt, increasing by one percent compared to March 2012 and up 3.5 percent compared to March 2011, while it was up 9.4 percent compared to January this year. Total global crude steel production in the first quarter of the current year increased by 2.3 percent to 388.7 million mt compared to the same period of 2012 and was up 3.9 percent compared to January-March 2011.

In March, crude steel output in Asia amounted to 90 million mt, up by 4.8 percent, with 66.3 million mt produced by China, up by 6.6 percent, 9.45 million mt produced by Japan, up by 1.3 percent, and 5.7 million mt produced by South Korea, down by seven percent - with all comparisons on year-on-year basis.

EU-27 countries produced 14.6 million mt of crude steel in March, down 6.6 percent compared with March 2012. In March this year, Germany's output was 3.8 million mt, down by 2.2 percent year on year, Italy's crude steel output was 2.2 million mt, down 18.4 percent year on year, and Spain's crude steel output was 1.35 million mt, down 2.3 percent year on year.

Turkey produced 2.98 million metric tons of crude steel in March this year, with a 4.6 percent decrease from the same month in 2012. Meanwhile, Iran produced 1.2 million mt of crude steel in March, up by 4.5 percent compared to the same month of the previous year.

The CIS registered a crude steel output of 9.4 million mt in March, down 4.5 percent year on year, with Russia producing 6 million mt, down 2.8 percent compared to March 2012, and Ukraine producing 2.87 million mt, down 2.9 percent on year-on-year basis.

In North America in March, crude steel output totaled 10.2 million mt, down 6.3 percent year on year, with the US producing 7.3 million mt and Mexico producing 1.6 million mt, down 8.4 percent and up 1.3 percent respectively on year-on-year basis.

Meanwhile, crude steel output in South America in March amounted to 3.97 million mt, down by 7.8 percent year on year, with Brazil's output coming to 2.9 million mt, down 7.6 percent year on year.

In the given month, the average capacity utilization of steel mills across the globe was 79.4 percent, down from 80.5 percent in February this year, and down 2.1 percentage points compared to the same month last year.
