Celebrating The Iconic Sports Car's 50th Anniversary Will Cross The Sydney Harbour Bridge

A selection of 100 Porsche 911 models celebrating the iconic sports car’s 50th anniversary will cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge on September 15.

Part of Australia’s role in the German manufacturer’s global 50 Years of 911 celebrations, Porsche Cars Australia says the convoy will be the longest line-up of Porsche 911s ever assembled on local soil.

Leading the group will be an original 1967 911 from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart (pictured top), which has already travelled to Paris, Geneva, Shanghai, London and Sao Paolo as part of the Golden Anniversary and will travel on to Tokyo, Singapore and Los Angeles following the Australian event.

The 100-strong group will cross the steel landmark at 8am, travelling in single file under a NSW Police escort.

Porsche Cars Australia managing director Michael Winkler says being included in the 911 world tour is testament to the strong reputation Australia has internationally as a nation of Porsche enthusiasts.

“It was our plan to celebrate 50 years of 911 with 50 911s in an organised convoy across Sydney Harbour, but response from members of the Porsche Club New South Wales was overwhelming and we were forced to close off entries once we hit 100, barely a few days after expressions of interest were sought,” Winkler said.

“The convoy should make a spectacular sight with around 1.5km of Porsche 911s nose to tail streaming across Sydney Harbour.”

So far this year, the 50 Years of 911 celebrations have spawned the Porsche 911 50 Years Edition model, which will make its debut on September 10 at the Frankfurt motor show, and a video of the brand’s new 911 RSR and its racing pedigree.

The very first Porsche 911 model, the type 901 (pictured above), made its public debut at the Frankfurt motor show in 1963.
