Coveris Develops New Multi-Layer Film for The Co-Op

Packaging and coatings solutions manufacturer Coveris has developed a new multi-layer film for British consumer co-operative, the Co-op.

The Co-op recently announced that it plans to have 80% of its own-brand packaging recyclable by 2020.

The Co-op released figures which reveal that two-thirds of all plastic packaging used for consumer products in the UK is being sent to landfill or incineration with only one third being recycled.

Coveris has been working with the retailer and its manufacturers to offer more recyclable solutions using new materials and manufacturing technologies.

The multi-layer film features integral sealing capabilities that allow existing polyethylene lined packaging trays to be recycled more easily.

Traditionally, film sealed to the pre-lined tray using a polythene bonding layer, which is presently used in making PET tray is more likely to be recycled.

The finished format from Coveris is claimed to offer a sustainable, high quality and high performance solution for tray packed products.

The new film packaging which has been developed in collaboration with Tulip, is available across Co-op’s cooked meat lines.

The film has been formulated using a nine-layer extrusion technology to form a high performance laminate. It has a burst-peel functionality, offering customer-friendly and easy-to-open solution.

Tulip’s group innovation manager Matt Richards said “We are delighted to have worked alongside Co-op and our packaging supplier Coveris on this project, which is an excellent example of how supply chain collaboration plays a key role in reducing packaging waste.

“Tulip is committed to developing more recyclable packaging solutions that benefit product quality and shelf life, and this innovative new film meets leading sustainability, functionality and performance demands.”
