Driving Recorder Sales See Polarized Developments

The driving recorder market in Taiwan has seen polarized developments, with white-box makers competing for the sub-NT$2,000 (US$64) segment, and first-tier vendors focusing on the NT$5,000 and above segment.

Sales of driving recorders have replaced PND devices as the mainstream products for in-car devices, attracting first-tier vendors including Garmin, Mio, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Philips to tap the market.

The high-end models offered by first-tier vendors usually come with enhanced video recording capability supporting 1080p resolutions, Sony's image sensors and built-in GPS functionality.

However, competition between Ambarella and Novatek Microelectronics for the automotive camera solution market will be instrumental for driving recorder makers to roll out models with high price/performance ratios and therefore bring a healthy development to the driving recorder industry, said market observers.
