Convex Plastics Has Developed Two Compostable Form

Convex Plastics has developed two compostable form, fill seal and pre-made vacuum-sealed packs for Australian coffee roaster Coffico Coffee’s Leaf Organic range.

According to the New Zealand-based company, the Econic rewind film allows Coffico to continue converting its own bags for fresh roasted coffee beans, and the vacuum-sealed packs have been developed to keep the Leaf Organic fresh ground coffee fresh for long.

Econic packaging is made from three renewable flexible films that have been jointly laminated to provide the sealing and barrier properties for coffee and dry foods.

For compostable packaging, the films have been internationally certified to the American ASTM D6400, European EN13432 and Australian AS4736 standards.

Coffico sales and marketing manager Peter Conversano said Econic allowed the company to fulfil its ideal of being as sustainable as possible.

"We've been converting our own bags for nine years so we needed a film that was capable of being used in a roll form. The fact that the Econic material can do that was one of the major factors in choosing it," Conversano added.

Convex Plastics managing director Owen Embling said, "We are constantly striving to develop sustainable packaging options that meet or exceed the packaging and processing performance of traditional petroleum-based films."

At present, Convex is working with Coffico to develop an Econic pack for the company's Leaf Organic drinking chocolate, which is expected to be launched later in 2013.
