Expert Requested The Government of UK to Promote Textile and Apparel Production

Experts Urge UK Govt to Promote Local Textile Production

Experts, including fashion designers, retailers and university professors, have requested the Government of UK to promote textile and apparel production in Britain.
 
Speaking at a conference titled 'A New Dawn: Rebuilding UK Textile Manufacturing', University of Manchester's Professor Chris Carr said UK-manufacturing is again emerging as a feasible option, however, this calls for increased investment in the manufacturing sector.
 
Joe Dixon, Senior Vice President of Production at Brooks Brothers, a US-based apparel producer and retailer, said the UK Government should back efforts to portray the country as a centre of excellence in textile and garment production. 
 
Sustaining the past tradition, UK manufacturing can gain with the use of present-day technology and proper utilization of opportunities, he added.
 
Designer Sir Paul Smith said total reliance on the 'Made in Britain' label would not serve the purpose, and it requires rejuvenation of the entire textile and apparel manufacturing industry in the UK.
 
A report prepared by Lord Alliance and assembled by the University of Manchester, detailing how the UK can compete with other clothing manufacturing hubs was tabled during the event, which drew participation of over 550 clothing manufacturers and retailers. 
 
The event was organized by Livery companies Clothworkers', Dyers' and Weavers' Companies.
