And the Skylanders franchise has just passed the $1 billion mark in terms of worldwide retail sales.

Both figures inclusive of toy and accessory packs, according to The NPD Group, GfK Chart-track and Activision's internal estimates.

Skylanders first hit shelves in October 2011.

In 2012, the combined sales of Skylanders Giants and Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure toys outsold the top action figure lines in the US and Europe, including Beyblades, Star Wars and Transformers, says Activision.

“The Skylanders franchise became the first kids’ video game IP to cross the $1 billion mark in just 15 months, and I think we are still just starting to realise its potential,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

The news comes after Activision announced the third Skylanders game, Swap Force, which uses interchangable figures that can be combined in over 250 different ways.

Swap Force is currently being showcased at the US Toy Fair 2013 in New York, at booth 3061.
