Spyker B6 Venator Spyder Concept Debuts at Pebble Beach

Dutch sports car manufacturer Spyker has unveiled its B6 Venator Spyder Concept at the 2013 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

The new convertible concept comes just five months after the company revealed the B6 Venator Coupe Concept at this year's Geneva Motor Show in March.

Spyker CEO Victor Muller, who is also the company's chief designer, presented the car at the renowned California event.

The two-door, mid-engine sports car is essentially the same as the coupe in terms of design and styling, but in convertible form.

Underpinning the car is a lightweight aluminium structure while the body is all carbonfibre. The powerplant is the same transverse-mounted 3.5-litre V6, tuned to deliver over 280kW of power, according to Spyker.

In concept form, the B6 Venator gets a six-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels. Spyker claims the car has a kerb weight of less than 1400kg.

Inside, the Spyker concept features leather sourced from the Royal Hulshof Dutch Tanneries, and a turned aluminium fascia, similar to those seen on Spykers of the 1920s.

The red cover on the ignition switch is said to evoke the spirit of starting an aeroplane, and Spyker's trademark exposed gear change mechanism was inspired by early aircraft controls from the company's aviation heritage.

The Spyker B6 Venator Spyder Concept will begin production in late 2014 for key markets including Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and India, followed by the US in early 2015.

Positioned as an entry-level model for Spyker, the B6 Venator will be priced from around $163,000 (US$150,000) and will face rivals such as the Porsche 911, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, the Maserati Gran Turismo and Jaguar's new F-type.
