Total Corbion PLA to Exhibit Biobased Packaging at Interpack 2017

Total Corbion PLA said it will showcase new biobased packaging solutions at Interpack 2017 event in Germany.

The company will exhibit several partner applications in packaging and serviceware based on Luminy Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) resins.

The Luminy PLA portfolio includes high heat and standard PLA grades. It is used across a range of markets ranging from packaging to consumer goods, fibers and automotive.

At the expo, Total Corbion will display the newly launched thermoformd PLA cup from Pacovis, under its naturesse product range.

The cups are made from renewable materials and are claimed have reduced carbon footprint compared to other paper coated cups.

For luxury cosmetics packaging, the company stated that it will showcase a biodegradable wood composite soap case. The product has been developed by Finnish company Sulapac.

The materials used for the cosmetic packaging are claimed to stand out above plastic packaging with its unique wood appearance.

It is made from safe, renewable and pure raw materials and does not contain any ecologically harmful compounds and also claimed to be as efficient and durable as conventional plastic.

Other products that will be displayed by the the company include thermoformed domes from Alphaform, nonwoven wipes from HengTian-Yangtze, PLA-lined paper cups from Totempak, thermoformed trays, thin film bags and single-use aprons from Gaia, coffee cup lids from WinGram, tea bags from NonWoven Networks, coffee capsules from ATI, thermoformed packaging from Bio4Pack and ice cream foamed packaging from Synbra.

In last November, Total and Corbion formed a 50/50 joint venture to develop bioplastics, particularly polylactic acid (PLA).

The JV intends to build a PLA polymerisation plant with an annual capacity of 75,000 tons per year at Corbion’s site in Thailand.
