Trade Resources Industry Views LED Demand in ASEAN Estimated at $1.5 Billion

LED Demand in ASEAN Estimated at $1.5 Billion

Demand for LED lighting in six main member countries of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) in 2015 is estimated at US$1.5 billion, accounting for 31.3% of total market value of US$4.8 billion for all types of lighting, according to LEDinside.

The six countries are Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and the Philippines, LEDinside said.

Average LED penetration of lighting in the six markets will rise from 12% in 2012 to 31.3% in 2015. International vendors such as Philips, GE and Toshiba dominate these markets currently, with the remaining share taken by local and China-based vendors. International and local vendors mostly have China-based makers undertake ODM/OEM production of LED lighting products.

The ASEAN Economic Community will come into effect at the end of 2015, and the Agreement on the ASEAN Harmonized Electric & Electronic Equipment Regulatory Regime (AHEEERR), a pact to harmonize standards of electric & electronic equipment among ASEAN members, will come into force beginning 2016. Then, any LED lighting product obtaining safety and quality certification in any ASEAN member can be sold in all other member countries without customs duties and product testing again, and this will facilitate LED lighting vendors to market their products in ASEAN countries.

Beginning 2016, local LED lighting vendors in the ASEAN market are expected to set up more assembly lines to decrease outsourced production by China-based makers.
