Altana Has Announced The Acquisition of The Specialty Coatings Business of Henkel

German chemical company Altana has announced the acquisition of the specialty coatings business of Henkel for an undisclosed sum. The business generated sales of around $15m in 2012.

According to Altana, the products are sold under MiraFoil and Miracure brand names and are said to be supplied to the packaging industry in North America primarily.

MiraFoil coatings, which are recognized as an environmentally responsible alternative to foil board laminating and hot foil stamping, can be applied to precise areas, reducing waste and shortening lead times.

Miracure coatings offer a range of matte, gloss, satin and silicone coatings for conventional printing processes creating visual appearance, such as glow-in-the-dark or dimensional texture.

The acquired business will be integrated into Actega Kelstar in the US and into Actega Terra in Germany, both of which belong to the Actega Coatings & Sealants division.

Altana CEO Dr Matthias Wolfgruber said, "By acquiring the specialty coatings business of Henkel we are continuing to execute our North American growth strategy consistently and focus on innovative specialty chemicals."

Acquired by way of an asset deal, the technologies include effect and overprint coatings curing under ultraviolet radiation and electron beam.
