Tanzania's Cotton Output for The Ongoing Season Is Likely to Plunge 40 Percent

Tanzania’s cotton output for the ongoing season is likely to plunge 40 percent, due to outdated agricultural techniques and other factors, according to a Tanzania’s Daily News report.

Tanzania’s cotton cultivation acreage has reduced by over 40 percent this season to 1.05 million acres from last season’s 1.42 million acres, data released by the Tanzania Cotton Association (TCA) shows.

Presenting a report on the cotton production outlook for the current season, TCA Secretary Boaz Abiero said this season cotton crop has been sown on around 1.05 million acres, with a projected output of 250 million kg, which would be 40 percent lower than last season’s yield of 354 million kg.

He said negative campaigns like ‘No Book No Cotton’ against cotton farming are also responsible for lower cultivation of cotton this season, which would result in low cotton production.   Reservations expressed by some cotton farmers regarding contract farming was also to blame for lower sowing of cotton this season, he added.
