A Self-Drive System for Cars Has Been Developed by a Team at Oxford University

A self-drive system for cars which could be sold for as little as £100 has been developed by a team at Oxford University.

The Oxford RobotCar UK Project is led by Professor Paul Newmanfrom the university's department of engineering science who is working with machine learning specialist Dr Ingmar Posner.

The car, an electricity-powered Nissan Leaf, is being tested at Begbrooke Science Park in Oxfordshire.

Advances in 3D mapping have nade the low-cost Oxford approach possible. Instead of having an expensive 3D laser on the roof of the car, the Oxford car uses lasers and small cameras to build a 3D model of a route which it then memorises.

When it recognisies a route the system offers to take over from the driver. A touch of the brake restores control to the driver.

It is "going to be huge," says Newman.
