Report - Early Galaxy S8 Launch Impossible

Tags: Galaxy, S8

Yesterday, we learned via the Wall Street Journal that Samsung is stil struggling to identify exactly what caused its Note 7 phablets to explode, putting the Galaxy S8's February launch in jeopardy.

And while the WSJ report claimed Samsung had delayed the launch of the S8 by two weeks, prior to the report, some analysts predicted the company would bring the launch of its next flagship handset forward to make up for the financial losses from the Note 7 debacle.

So, some say the phone will launch early, others say the phone will be delayed, and now, a new report quotes a Samsung executive as saying the phone will debut right on time.

The 'high-ranking official' told Korea's ET News: "Currently we do not have any plans to release Galaxy S8 early. Even before we released Galaxy Note7, we had a separate plan to announce Galaxy S8. Pushing release date forward all of sudden is something that is realistically impossible."

What's more, the report claims the phone will launch at MWC 2017 as planned, meaning we could get our first look at the handset in February, ahead of a likely March release date.

At this point then, Samsung's plans remain a mystery to us on the outside, but that's likely due to the fact that Samsung isn't entirely sure what it's doing either.

The firm still isn't sure what caused the Note 7 overheating issues, after initially blaming batteries made by its affiliate Samsung SDI, before replacement handsets with new batteries also began overheating, and in some cases exploding.

Samsung will therefore be doing all it can to ensure the Galaxy S8, expected to come with wither a 5.1-inch or 5.5-inch 4K display, is a success.

We should hear more in the coming weeks about plans for the S8 launch, so stay tuned for the latest.
