The Australian Trucking Association (ATA) says heavy vehicle registration charges should be decreased for 70 per cent, in its submission to the NTC's draft 2014 Heavy Vehicle Charges Determination.
In the submission the ATA said it supported moving to the proposed 'option A' charging model from 1 July 2014.
However, the ATA does not support the NTC's proposal for a three-year staged implementation of its updated charging model, nor the proposed NHVR funding allocation.
ATA national policy manager David Coonan said the NTC's consultation process had been very positive.
"We're very pleased the government has now acknowledged the overcharging that occurs under the current heavy vehicle charges system," David said.
"The ATA supports moving to the NTC's proposed charging 'option A' by 1 July 2014 to stop this over-recovery, and then continuing to improve the charging system by moving to 'option B' by 1 July 2015.
"The trucking industry has always been dedicated to paying its way. However, we know that delaying the start of this new charging option will overcharge operators by $200 million."
