Müller Dairy has acquired Nom Dairy, with its modern yogurt production facility in Telford, Shropshire in a bid to build its presence in the UK own-label yogurt market.

Müller Dairy has acquired Nom Dairy for an undisclosed sum

The Nom Dairy UK facility, sited on a 9.7ha (24-acre) site at Donnington Wood, Telford, has a turnover of £43M a year.

Heiner Kamps, ceo of Müller parent firm Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller, said the acquisition – for an undisclosed sum – underlined its commitment to the UK, which along with Germany and the US, was a core market.

'Strong opportunities in the UK'

"We believe that there are strong opportunities in the UK private label yogurt sector and the Telford facility will help us to realise our plans to provide customers with great products in this important market," said Kamps.

Ronald Kers, chief executive of Müller UK & Ireland, said: "We want to be the biggest and best dairy company in the UK and by acquiring this excellent facility we can increase the range of private label yogurt products made with milk from British farms, which in turn can reduce the UK's dependence on imported dairy products."

The deal follows recent UK acquisitions by Müller UK & Ireland including: the fresh milk processor Robert Wiseman Dairies and a chilled desserts plant at Minsterley, Shropshire.

Meanwhile, Müller expected production at its butter manufacturing facility at Market Drayton, Shropshire – said to be the largest in the UK – to begin this autumn.
