Canadian Automotive Shipments Plunged in The First Half of 2013

Canadian automotive shipments plunged in the first half of 2013, according to an analysis by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants.

The industry analyst said the total value of all shipments in the vehicle assembly sector fell 5.8% from $28.23 billion in the first half of 2012 to $26.6 billion during the same period this year.

Likewise, shipments in the parts and accessories sector declined 8.3% to $13.31 billion, DesRosiers said.

"These Canadian manufacturing sector declines come as vehicle markets in Canada and the US continue to climb; US light vehicle sales are up 8.3% relative to 2012 (with a 15.6 million unit SAAR), while Canadian vehicle buyers have pushed the market to record heights, exceeding last year's YTD sales total by 2.9%," DesRosiers wrote in its Automotove Reports newsletter. "An overwhelming proportion of Canadian vehicle and vehicle parts production is consumed by these two North American markets."
