The Volvo XC Coupe Concept Has Been Teased Ahead of Its World Premiere

Volvo XC Coupe Concept Teases Future Crossover Design

The Volvo XC Coupe concept has been teased ahead of its world premiere at January’s Detroit auto show, hinting at the styling direction of the Swedish car maker’s next-generation of crossover vehicles, including the all-new XC90 due in 2014.

The second of three design studies by Volvo Car Group’s new head of design, Thomas Ingenlath, the Volvo XC Coupe concept shares its overall design language with the Volvo Concept Coupe unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show.

Aimed at building on Volvo’s history of Cross Country and XC models, Volvo says the XC Coupe concept will be based on its new Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) and combine the company’s famous safety technology with a “contemporary Scandinavian active lifestyle”.

To be revealed in full on January 8, the XC Coupe concept mimics the front end of the original Concept Coupe with T-shaped LED daytime running lights incorporated into sleek headlights, low side and central air intakes and a vertical-slatted radiator grille.

The rear carries over the earlier concept’s distinctive C-shaped tail-lights, albeit expanded to run up into the two-door XC Coupe’s narrowing tailgate.

Matching orange front and rear skid plates also join roof racks and a roof-mounted cargo unit.

The 2014 Detroit auto show begins on January 13.
