Hubbell in Partnership with The City of Greenville Announced The Launch of a New LED

Hubbell lighting, a market leader in innovative lighting technology, design and manufacturing for over 120 years, in partnership with the City of Greenville, SC, Duke Energy and GE announced the launch of a new light-emitting diode (LED) street lighting pilot program along the city's Main Street as a part of the City's "Greening of Greenville" program. The program was developed to improve energy efficiency in the City's public spaces.

The existing downtown streetscape was originally designed by Lawrence Halprin over 30 years ago with groupings of 250 watt high-pressure sodium (HPS) lamped street lights known as cobra-heads, and 215 watt mercury-vapor pedestrian post-top fixtures. These fixtures were the current technology of that day but consume far more energy than today's new energy efficient solid-state LED technology.

Hubbell Lighting's Architectural Area Lighting (AAL) brand ( www.aal.net ) has installed the most energy efficient lighting technology available today in four different types of LED outdoor pedestrian lighting fixtures along the sidewalks on the Hyatt Regency block of Main Street between Beattie Place and East North Street. The four types include Parkway Square, Cubic Indirect, Providence and Promenade. Throughout 2012, the public is invited to visit the City's website ( www.greeningofgreenville.com ) to voice its preference of styles.

According to Mayor Knox White, the start of today's six-month pilot continues the City's long history of public-private partnerships and is just part of a longer-term process to make Greenville greener and more livable for it citizens. "With the Main Street LED Pilot, we continue to show that Downtown Greenville is at the forefront of creating great public spaces and showcasing technology. This lighting pilot will allow our partners and the public to measure the impact of this new technology and hopefully set a path forward for Downtown's future lighting."

All of the new LED lighting fixtures from Hubbell Lighting take advantage of the newest solid-state lighting technology and offer significantly improved energy efficiency (40-85%) over the old mercury-vapor and high-pressure sodium fixtures that were previously installed in the 1970s and 80s. The new fixtures also have a very long life expectancy (approximately 50,000 hours), which will bring an added benefit to the City in reduced maintenance costs.

Additionally, Hubbell Lighting deployed this energy-efficient technology over the center drive lanes of Main Street with its new Roadway RM LED cobra-head street lighting fixtures. The state-of-the-art optics feature 48 LEDs (68w) that deliver more visible and uniform light with an unprecedented 89 lumens per watt energy efficiency. The Roadway RM LED Series is also available as a retrofit kit (Roadway RF LED kit) for use in existing HPS cobra head fixtures from other lighting manufacturers. The Roadway RM LED Series can be specified with an optional photocell to help the City maximize its energy savings by automatically shutting the luminaire off during daylight hours without any additional programming or maintenance required. The installation of these streetlights provides the City of Greenville with a low maintenance, high efficiency LED solution that has more than four times the life of HPS with over 65% energy savings.

Scott H. Muse, President of Hubbell Lighting said, "We are excited that we are able to display the latest in lighting technology in our hometown. We feel the architectural styles compliment the design of Downtown and we are excited to be part of the next generation of lighting for Downtown Greenville."

All of the Hubbell Lighting fixtures in this program are manufactured in the USA.
