Indian Power Utilities' Thermal Coal Imports Jumped by 26.5% to 79.7m Mt in 2013-2014

Indian power utilities' thermal coal imports jumped by 26.5% to 79.7 million mt in fiscal 2013-2014, compared to 63 million mt a year ago, a Central Electricity Authority official told Platts Wednesday.

Of the total, 36.6 million mt of coal was imported by 28 power utilities in the 12-month period ended March 31, for blending purposes, against a target of 50 million mt, the official said.

The balance of 43.1 million mt went to 10 utilities, which use only imported coal for their power plants, he said. This volume exceeded an annual target of 32 million mt, he added.

Adani Power imported the highest quantity of coal at around 12 million mt during fiscal 2013-14, followed by the Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project at 11.8 million mt and NTPC Limited at 10.7 million mt.
