A Servo Control Motor Is an Electromechanical Device

A servo control motor is an electromechanical device that has an electrical input that helps identify the position of the armature of a motor.Servo mechanism simply speaks of a system where a feedback or error correcting signal helps in the management of speed, mechanical positions, and other relevant parameters.

The steam engine regulator is the first known type of servo motor. These controls also found their applications in fire controllers to adjust the firing angle and the air-fuel ratio during the Second World War.Today servo control systems are employed in the field of IT hardware during the early developmental stages.

Understanding the Mechanism of a Servo Motor

Typically, there exist two types of motors-DC Servo Motor and AC Servo Motor. The servo is essentially a small device that consists of a shaft for the output. The angular position of the shaft can be regulated with the help of coded signals that are sent to the servo. This position of the shaft is maintained as long as the servo keeps receiving the signals. When the signal that is sent changes, the position of the shaft is also shifted.

The working mechanism of a servo is extremely simple. The control circuits that exist inside the potentiometer and the servo are linked with the output device, known as the shaft. It is the potentiometer which assists in the regulation of the angle of the shaft with the help of coded signals that are received and the control circuit.Typically, this shaft is easily angled between 0 to 180 degrees and sometimes also has a wider range depending on the design and manufacturer. The angular position of a shaft is limited due to the placement of a stopper in the gear case.

Applications of brushless AC Servo Motors and Other Servo Control Systems

While AC and DC servo motors find their applications across industries, such as the automotive and the aviation sectors, servo motors have been best applied in the field of robotics.Even though the servos employed in this field are very small in size, they are extremely powerful and can be easily controlled with the help of a built-in circuit. The servos used in the field of robotics are known to derive power that is proportional to the load. This load is also known mechanical load. These servos are environment conscious mechanisms as they are popular for their energy conserving properties.

The existence of a servo motor facilitates the achievement of high level of error reduction. This consequently enables optimum efficiency within any mechanical system.
