In a conversation with fibre2fashion, Mr. Andy Caughey, owner of Armadillo Merino, said, “We have received the UK national award (Startups Awards) for Product Business of the Year 2012 at London.”

The product business award is given for a new business which produces exciting and tangible products with great potential.

According to Mr. Caughey, judges described the product as “another impressive example of British design and innovation leading the world.”

The judges described Armadillo Merino as “the only range of all natural body armor using merino wool for fire fighters, police and military personnel and will help towards saving lives. This product has the potential to become just the sort of quality specialist, world-leading medium sized business the UK needs,” Mr. Caughey adds.

“The judges were impressed by the competitive prices the company is able to offer for their high quality crafted products and by the range of contracts already won as well as pending,” he mentions.

Commenting about the groundbreaking deal signed with the Italian Navy to supply woolen innerwears, he says, “While exhibiting our product throughout Europe, a representative from Italian navy approached us for the supply of woolen innerwears.”

“We hope that the publicity from this deal will help raise the profile of superfine merino as a protective and performance base layer for professional risk takers,” he opines.

Talking about the product, he says, “We are combining superfine merino wool with modern manufacturing techniques to create what is regarded as the most advanced base layering system in the world today.”

About the significance of merino wool, Mr. Caughey says, “Merino wool is soft to wear, next-to-skin and it delivers better protection, performance and comfort to high risk workers in comparison to synthetics and cotton.”

“Wool has natural flame-retardant properties, it is breathable and thermoregulates with the added advantage of reducing body odor,” he informs.

Derbyshire-based Armadillo Merino specializes in next-to-skin protective clothing made from innovative knit fabrics that utilize the natural benefits of superfine merino wool.
